NHL Stanley Cup Winner, Olympic Gold Medalist and World Junior Champion.
Theo Fleury is five and a half feet tall but the prairie boy has been seen as a giant on the ice. A pro hockey player of immense athletic skill living the Canadian dream. His NHL years resulted in both a Stanley Cup and Olympic Gold but along with those heights came some terrible lows. Drug and alcohol fueled binges and wild unpredictable behaviour including, at one point, marching out of an arena in the middle of a game.
After nearly fifteen years as a player, team captain, and consistent points leader, Theo Fleury left the league in 2003 in a haze of disappointment and a fair bit of mystery.
But now there is a memoir that offers some sense of the private trauma's that were behind Theo Fleury's public displays.
And before it even hit the shelves, news was out about its most disturbing revelation, a tortured history of childhood sexual abuse. The alleged perpetrator was Graham James, the same coach convicted for his ongoing assults on Theo Fleury's NHL colleague Sheldon Kennedy, when Kennedy was a teen.
The book is entitled "Playing With Fire: The highest highs and the lowest lows of Theo Fleury". It is now a #1 bestseller.
